About The Commons Promise

A promise
carried forward.

We build the capacity of people and organizations so communities can shape a more resilient, equitable future.

01

Rooted in decades of nonprofit partnership. Built for the questions communities are carrying now.

Our story

Legacy is not something we preserve behind glass. It is something we put to work.

The Commons Promise is a nonprofit capacity-building organization created to help purpose-driven people, organizations, and partnerships do more than meet the moment. We help them build the clarity, confidence, practices, and relationships to keep moving meaningful work forward.

Our work carries on the legacy and spirit of 501 Commons: the belief that nonprofits deserve trusted expertise, practical support, and a partner who understands both the urgency of the mission and the realities of leading with limited resources.

That legacy is a foundation—not a boundary. The Commons Promise brings it forward through customized consulting, leadership and team development, organizational strategy, human resources support, facilitation, and learning. We honor what organizations already know, shape every engagement around context, and work in ways that leave capability behind.

What endures

01

Expertise within reach

Useful guidance should be accessible to organizations of every size, especially those closest to community.

02

Capacity that stays

The work is successful when stronger judgment, practices, and relationships remain after an engagement ends.

03

Partnership with purpose

We listen before we prescribe, honor lived experience, and build alongside—not around—the people doing the work.

Experience in service to community

The Executive Service Corps lives on through the work.

For decades, the Executive Service Corps has connected seasoned professionals with nonprofit leaders who need practical, trusted counsel. The Commons Promise will continue to steward and activate that spirit of service.

Our Service Corps brings deep professional experience into relationship with community knowledge. Members serve as consultants, coaches, facilitators, and thought partners—helping organizations navigate change, strengthen governance and people practices, clarify strategy, and grow leadership capacity.

This is more than volunteer expertise. It is a shared resource: wisdom circulated across generations, sectors, and communities so that more organizations can thrive.

Our people

Experience, held in relationship.

Our team pairs seasoned expertise with curiosity, care, and respect for the people closest to the work.
